Gutters and soffits play a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage. When they start leaking, it can lead to bigger issues. In this post, we’ll explore four common types of leaks you might encounter and how to address them.

Overflowings eavestroughs can damage your foundation and landscaping.

1. Overflowing Eavestrough

When gutters overflow, it’s often due to blockages from leaves, debris, or ice. Water spilling over the sides of your eavestrough can damage your foundation and landscaping. Regular cleaning or installing gutter guards can prevent this issue and ensure proper drainage.

Inadequate shingle overhang and/or drip edge can lead to wood damage and rot.

2. Leaking Behind Gutters Due to Short Shingles or Inadequate Drip Edge

If you notice water leaking behind your gutters, spots along your sidewalk, or icicles on your fascia board, it’s likely due to shingles that are too short or a lack of drip edge. The drip edge is designed to direct water into the gutters, but if it’s missing or inadequate, water will seep behind, leading to wood rot and structural damage.

Installing or repairing the drip edge can solve this problem.  To learn more about drip edge, click here!

Attic rain often seeps through your soffits.

3. Attic Rain Coming Through Soffits

The first indications of attic rain often include wet or stained siding, or icicles forming on the soffits.  Attic rain happens when warm air in the attic condenses, creating moisture that can leak out through soffits. This is especially common in cold climates where improper ventilation or insulation allows warm air to escape.

Ensuring your attic has proper insulation and ventilation can prevent this moisture buildup and protect your soffits.

4. Leaky Joints

Joints in gutters are a common weak point where leaks can occur, especially with age. As the sealant deteriorates or the joints loosen, water escapes through the gaps. Resealing or replacing your gutters can fix these leaks and improve the overall functionality of your system.
