If you’re experiencing attic rain, you may notice:

• Water Stain or Dampness: On your ceilings, soffits or exterior walls.

• Wet or Moldy Attic: If your attic insulation or roof sheeting is damp or has mold, this is a clear indication of excess moisture in your attic.

• Drips or icicles on Soffits: Condensation may escape through soffits, especially during warmer winter days.

What Causes Attic Rain?

When the warm air from inside your home hits the cold surfaces in your attic, it condenses and forms water droplets.  Much like how condensation, like a cold class of water in a warm room.

Attic ventilation is crucial to remove the heat and moisture in the home’s attic.  If the home lacks airflow or ventilation in the attic, it prevents this moisture from escaping.

When this moisture accumulates in excess, it leads to a phenomenon called attic rain.  This moisture then runs down and roof sheeting to your soffits and/or rains down on your insulation.

Excess heat and moisture due to poor insulation and air sealing the penetrations through the vapor barrier, increases the amount of moisture in the attic, therefore, increasing the amount of ventilation required.

New homes in Edmonton are often built close together. Due to fire safety regulations, building codes frequently require non-vented soffits on the sides of homes to prevent the spread of flames between houses. This lack of ventilation requires extra care insulating the home.

Why Is Attic Rain a Problem?

Attic rain can cause significant damage to your home. Over time, it can lead to:

• Compromised Insulation: Wet insulation is less effective, leading to increased heating costs.

• Structural Damage: Continued moisture exposure can damage wooden beams and other structural components.

• Mold: Excess moisture provides an ideal environment for mold growth, which can negatively impact indoor air quality and your family’s health.

• Ice Build Up Under Roof Edge:  This moisture drips through the soffits down to the ground below.  During the winter months, this freezes and creates ice spots.

How to Prevent Attic Rain

Preventing attic rain requires ensuring proper insulation and ventilation in your attic. Here are some steps to consider:

• Improve Insulation: Adding or upgrading your attic insulation helps prevent warm air from entering the attic. Make sure there are no gaps or thin spots.

• Seal Air Leaks: Look for any cracks, gaps, or openings where warm air might escape into the attic. Seal these areas to stop the flow of air.

• Increase Ventilation: Proper attic ventilation helps regulate temperature and moisture levels. Install or upgrade vents and soffits to promote airflow.

• Check for Ice Dams: Ice dams on your roof can worsen attic rain, as they trap water and prevent proper drainage. Clear your gutters and ensure there’s a way for snow and ice to melt and flow away from your home.
